History of McKenzie Memorial Library

The library was started by the McKenzie Business and Professional Women’s Club, which was organized in 1950. The Bank of McKenzie was chartered on January 28, 1888. In 1919, a new façade was added to the building and it remains today. The bank served the town well and boasted three vaults. On November 28, 1923, the bank and McKenzie garnered national attention when the bank was robbed. During the depression, the bank merged with Commercial Bank in June 1931. After Commercial Bank closed in McKenzie, the building was occupied by the newly formed McKenzie Bank that operated in that location until the mid-sixties. Today, the building is home to the McKenzie Memorial Library.
